Basic Black
Billy Head, GA
Your passing impression of this ’64 is that of a very basic old Chevy that was maybe once a Government vehicle or a decommissioned cop car. Of course, on closer inspection you’d probably notice the 409 emblems on the front fenders and that alone might change your mind about what this car is or was.
Popping the hood would be the clincher because you’d be ogling the potent, chromed-up 400hp 409 motor. At that point, you’d have the sudden realization that you were in the presence of a factory-produced, plain, black Chevy powerhouse “sleeper”!
This unobtrusive but screamin’ black ’64 sled is proudly owned by two-time owner, Billy Head of Gainesville, Georgia. Yep, Billy has owned this car twice. He bought it new in 1964, drove it until 1979 and then sold it...only to regret that move almost immediately. For the next 11 years Billy would see the ’64 around town with seven different owners behind the wheel. Finally, he decided the car needed to be back in his garage...once and for all. He tracked down the current owner and bought it back in 1990.
Once Billy had his first car back home, he was amazed that the car was in quite good condition after having so many owners. A new paint job, minor engine work and a thorough interior cleaning were all that was needed to bring the car back to almost new condition.
These days, Billy and his ’64 regularly cruise the streets and back roads in and around Gainesville. So, if you’re ever in town and you see a plain, black, old Chevy and a guy behind the wheel with a big smile on his face...that’s Billy!
